How are Zucchini and Pumpkin related?

It is common that many people don’t even know where zucchini comes from, either on the internet or in real life, that is, they don’t know if this crop comes from some other species or is independent. Is the zucchini a relative of pumpkin?  

Yes, the zucchini is a descendant of the pumpkin, but not only pumpkin apparently, but also squash, zucchini, squash, ayote, squash, butternut squash, butternut and pumpkin. The term “pumpkin ” does not only refer to the vegetable, but it is also used to refer to this series of fruits that belong to the cucurbitaceae family.  

What is zucchini?

Another way to eat zucchini is in puree, which can be added to muffin batter to give it a natural sweetness.

What is pumpkin?

  • Delicata (you read that right, instead of delicata, delicata)
  • Hubbard
  • Kabocha 

On the other hand, among the summer pumpkin species are the spaghetti squash and the zucchini.  

The squash is native to America and is distributed throughout the world thanks to the travels of the Spaniards in the American conquest.

Most squash species can be recognized by their bright colors of yellow and orange tones. They can have a neutral, sweet (but not at the level of a fruit) or salty flavor depending on each one, for this reason, they are intended to be used both in sweet or dessert dishes as well as savory.  Most have an earthy texture. Depending on the species, they can be consumed fresh, steamed or baked, pureed, in soups and creams and even in sweet breads and cakes.

What are pumpkins good for?

This food is rich in a series of minerals such as water and fiber and is low in calories, so it is quite good for people with digestive discomfort and weight loss problems. If that were not enough, pumpkin also has a significant amount of beta-carotene, an antioxidant par excellence.

Similarities between zucchini and pumpkin    

  • Both belong to the cucurbitaceae family in the genus cucurbita.
  • Both zucchini and pumpkin are used by eastern and western chefs in sweet or savory dishes.

Differences between zucchini and pumpkin   

Even after discovering that these species are related, people still question how to differentiate one from the other. The main difference is that pumpkin would be the backbone or general name of these species of the genus cucurbita and zucchini is just a type of summer pumpkin. The pumpkin family is divided into two classes: winter and summer pumpkins, in which zucchini is included. In short, all zucchinis are pumpkins, but not all pumpkins are zucchinis.


Zucchini, one of the varieties of summer Squash, can be eaten raw in salads, while other varieties are cooked because they are harder and can be served with other vegetables in various presentations already mentioned.


The zucchini has an elongated shape similar to a cucumber while the pumpkin is round in general, but this shape can vary according to its type.

Is zucchini a smaller version of pumpkin?

In case it is still not clear, the zucchini is related to the pumpkin but they are not the same type of vegetable. However, the zucchini is smaller than the pumpkin, the former measures on average from 14 to 20 centimeters long and the pumpkin can measure from 25 to 40 centimeters in diameter.

Are zucchini and butternut squash the same?  

Many people also wonder if zucchini and butternut squash are the same or if they are two different vegetables and the answer is that they are the same. Zucchini is another name for butternut squash and zucchini is another name for zucchini or vice versa.
